Mexican carrier suggests iPhone 4 without antenna woes due September 30

A semi-official confirmation has appeared today concerning an alleged iPhone 4 revision supposed to fix the nasty antenna issue, better known in the headlines as Antennagate. The bomb was dropped by a high-ranked carrier executive who publicly promised his company would have an improved handset on sale by the end of September.

Mexican carrier Telcel announced the arrival of iPhone 4 to the country this past Friday and their director of value added services Marco Quatorze told Spanish-language site CanalMX that Telcel, which is the biggest carrier in Mexico, will at first sell the existing iPhone 4 version offered elsewhere, the one with the known antenna deficiency.

A bit later, beginning on September 30th, Telcel will carry “a new device” without the reception malfunction. It’s unclear why the carrier would want to sell the “flawed” iPhone 4 and replace it with a newer model less than a month later. Apparently, those who buy the familiar iPhone 4 model from Friday, September 3 onwards, will be given an option to switch to a revised model, he said.

Christian’s Opinion

Take this information with a grain of salt because it’s based on Google’s translation of the original article and we don’t know whether Quatorze acted on the rumors or if he relayed the actual insider information. Speaking of which, September 30 chimes in with the expiration of Apple’s free bumpers program that Jobs announced at the iPhone 4 presser.

Apple’s boss told the gathered media that the offer will be valid for every iPhone 4 purchased through September 30, adding this:

We’ll re-examine this in September and decide whether to keep going or maybe we’ll have a better idea.

It would appear Apple already had a better solution in mind back then. Otherwise, Jobs would have never dropped a casual hint of a “better idea.”

Mexican carrier claims new iPhone 4 for October

Apple could still be planning a hardware replacement program for the iPhone 4 according to new rumours that have surfaced in Mexico.

At the Q&A of the Apple Antennagate press conference, Steve Jobs detailed how the company would be giving away a free bumper to everyone that has bought or buys an iPhone 4, up until 30 September, and that when questioned later said that Apple would “re-examine this in September and decide whether to keep going, or maybe we will have a better idea”.

Well fast forward a couple of months and CanalMX, a Mexican based tech site, is quoting an executive at Mexican carrier Telcel as telling them that Apple will release a revised version of the iPhone 4 by the end of September to address the highly-publicized antenna issue.

According to Marco Quatorze – Telcel’s director of Value Added Services – through the wonders of Google Translation, the iPhone 4 sold currently in Mexico will at first be the same hardware as that sold in the US as you would expect. However Quatorze then, according to the site, detailed that a new device that does not have the “malfunction of the reception” would be introduced.

Whether or not Quatorze would be privy to such information is unsure, or it might be that Google’s translation tool has led to a misunderstanding of the report, however as we questioned back at the Antennagate press conference, you have to wonder why the 30 September date as been set and why Steve Jobs, the company’s CEO, was so evasive in answering the question at the time.

And you thought those Apple Antennagate stories where over and done with.

iphone 4 Multitasking

iPhone 4 introduces a whole new way of multitasking. Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.1 This smarter approach to multitasking is available only on iPhone.

Multitasking Done the right way

Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.* This smarter approach to multitasking is available only on iPhone.

Switch between apps quickly.

The multitasking user interface allows you to quickly switch between recently used apps. Just double-click the Home button to reveal your recently used apps. Scroll right to see more apps, then tap one to reopen it. No need to wait for the app to reload.

And pick up right where you left off.

Apps can remember where you left off. So when you return to the app, you can jump right back into playing your game, reading the news, finding a restaurant, or whatever you were doing.

Listen to audio in the background.

Now you can listen to audio from compatible third-party apps while checking email, surfing the web, playing games, and performing other tasks. So when you want to follow a ball game or listen to music from Pandora, your productivity never skips a beat.

Get VoIP calls while using other apps.

Third-party apps such as Skype let you make voice calls over the Internet. Multitasking in iPhone 4 makes it possible to receive these Skype or VoIP calls while other apps are running, even when your iPhone is locked. And during a call, you can keep the conversation going while you switch to another task, such as checking a movie listing or reading an email.

Keep GPS apps running.

Apps that use GPS can continue to run in the background. Not only do they constantly update your position, they can also give you spoken turn-by-turn directions even as you listen to music (the music volume lowers while the directions are spoken). It’s perfect for social networking apps, too. Now you and your friends can find each other even when you’re not actively using the app.

Apple iphone 4 features

iphone 4.In so many ways, it’s a first.

While everyone else was busy trying to keep up with iPhone, we were busy creating amazing new features that make iPhone more powerful, easier to use, and more indispensable than ever. The result is iPhone 4. The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone.

Facetime Phone calls like you’ve never seen before.
People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.

One-tap simple.

FaceTime works right out of the box — no need to set up a special account or screen name. And using FaceTime is as easy as it gets. Let’s say you want to start a video call with your best friend. Just find her entry in your Contacts and tap the FaceTime button. Or maybe you’re already on a voice call with her and you want to switch to video. Just tap the FaceTime button on the Phone screen. Either way, an invitation pops up on her iPhone 4 screen asking if she wants to join you. When she accepts, the video call begins. It’s all perfectly seamless. And it works in both portrait and landscape modes.

Two cameras made for video calling

iPhone 4 has two built-in cameras, one on the front above the display and one on the back next to the LED flash. The front camera has been tuned for FaceTime. It has just the right field of view and focal length to focus on your face at arm’s length. So it always presents you in the best possible light.

Share what you see with the back camera

Imagine your sister is away at school and can’t make it to your son’s birthday. So you’re cheering her up with a FaceTime call. As the cupcakes come out, your son’s eyes light up, and you just have to share it. Tap a button, and before you can say, “Make a wish,” iPhone 4 switches to the back camera, and to the birthday boy’s big moment. Another tap switches back to the front camera and to you.

Apple iPhone 3GS vs Nokia N97 Comparison Pics-Apple iPhone 3GS VS Nokia N97

Apple iPhone 3GS vs Nokia N97 Comparison Pics

You must have seen the N97 vs iPhone 3G Pictures But here is a photo gallery showing the comparison between the Apple iPhone 3GS and Nokia N97. Well the 3GS is not much different from the 3G in terms of external hardware. The internal hardware had some great improvements including a faster CPU and more RAM for apps. The N97 is a great device and beats the iPhone in most departments except the apps and the UI. The iPhone offers some of the best apps on the mobile platform and takes the mobile user experience to a whole new level.

The iPhone uses a finger friendly capacitive touchscreen whereas N97 uses a stylus friendly Resistive touchscreen display. Both technologies have their own pros and cons. One tends to appreciate the responsiveness of the iPhone screen but curses the misspellings due to the unintentional presses recorded. The N97’s display on the other hand works like a charm with the stylus but demands a lot more pressure from your fingers and its not as responsive as the iPhone’s screen. But firmware updates seem to have improved the N97’s touch feature quite a bit.

On the Camera front the 3GS just can’t compete with the N97 for capturing images. But for video recording  , the 3GS looks impressive with its ability to easily edit and upload videos. Enjoy the pics below and let us know which phone would you vote for ? The 3GS or the N97

Apple iPhone 3GS VS Nokia N97

Nokia’s latest in its high end smart phone series is the Nokia N97. It is the first N series phone having a touch screen. Also having a storage of 32 GB, Nokia maps, a 5 megapixel camera, Music service and lot of other exciting features, this phone is proving to be a smart opponent to Apple’s latest release which is the iPhone 3GS. Their specifications are mostly identical including their dimensions too.

Just like the Apple iPhone 3GS, on the Nokia N97, you just have to simply touch the screen and move it in the direction where you want to scroll it. However in the Nokia N97, one feature that is missing is the pinch which is used for shrinking and enlarging the screen. The major difference between the iPhone and the Nokia n97 is the fact that the apple iPhone is designed with the absence of a keyboard while on the other hand the Nokia N97 has been designed with added touch features to the keyboard device. This has a deep implication for the users’ experience. And mostly the iPhone succeeds in a better way than a Nokia N97.
Unlike all the previous nokia N series phones, the N 97’s home screen can easily be customized with different widgets which allows the user to see the different types of information like the weather, emails received, friend’s status or the summary of the user’s Facebook account and all this works with the touch screen too. When we compare both the phones’ springboard, Nokia has an entirely different approach. Its home screen gives a lot of useful information on the deck while the iPhone has focused on an easy access to its applications and they are easier to use as compared to the N97 as its applications are hidden two folds away from the main screen. The iPhone is highly optimized for filing, reading, forwarding and deleting the emails that also makes it an overall smooth experience. One major improvement which is required in the N97 emails is the auto-correct feature which will allow spelling mistakes to be corrected more easily.

The N97 has a 5 megapixel camera and a dual LED flash which is as good as today’s any snapshot cameras. The digital zoom of the N97 is pretty good too as compared to the iPhone. Both iPhone as well as the N97 comes preloaded with the mapping software, the ability to plot a route ad a compass. Browsing the web is mostly equivalent on both the phones. The N97 browser and the Safari on the Apple iPhone 3GS, are both equipped with a webkit browsers, meaning that they both can render the pages almost identically. However, iPhone has an edge because of its multi-touch pinch gesture which makes it easy to read and display the pages on the iPhone.

Talking about the music feature, iphone has always had an edge, however, the N97 has also very good music features. The playback application the N97 is not as fine as in the iPhone. As for battery, Nokia N97 is surely a winner as compared to the iPhone’s bad power consumption. The Apple iPhone 3GS as the screen dimensions of 480×320 while the n97 wins with the dimensions of 640×360.

In the end we can say that the N97 is a little less polished than the Apple iPhone and that iPhone’s experience is more simply integrated overall than the Nokia N97. But both the handsets have their own benefits, pros and cons. If you want to own one of these handsets, you can purchase Nokia N97 deals, N97 Mini deals or Apple iPhone 3GS deals in UK which are available with various lucrative mobile phone offers in UK offered by many reputed mobile phone retailers.

The iPhone 3GS Hardware Exposed & Analyzed

First, two quotes from my review of the original iPhone:

“The issue is that the iPhone interface is just as responsive as a computer, so you inherently expect the sort of performance you’d see on a notebook and it’s just impossible on a device like the iPhone.”

“I think overall we need a handful of upgrades to the iPhone alongside 3G; we need a faster processor, possibly more system memory, maybe even faster flash. The MLC flash in the iPhone has absolutely horrendous write speeds compared to SLC, which could be holding the iPhone back a bit. I can see Apple introducing a 3G version in about 12 months, addressing many of these issues at the same time.”
Indeed, 12 months after the launch of the first iPhone – Apple did fix the wireless performance issues with the iPhone 3G. Unfortunately, the hardware remained untouched. All of my other complaints in those two quotes remained open ticket items between Apple and I. In fact, things got worse. Here we have what I wrote at the end of my iPhone 3G review:

“Apple must be wary of the direction the iPhone is headed in. While the UI was absolutely perfect for the phone that launched a year ago, today’s iPhone is hardly the same. With easily over twice as many applications on an iPhone today vs. a year ago, performance and navigation have both suffered. The impact isn’t tremendous, but Apple will have to adjust the iPhone accordingly in order to avoid turning the platform into a bloated, complicated mess.”
Two days ago, Apple announced the iPhone 3GS – designed to address one thing: performance. The other half of my complaint in the conclusion of my 3G review, addressing navigation and UI with the new expanded iPhone platform, isn’t addressed by the 3GS. I suspect that in another year we’ll see that. But today, it’s about hardware.

The Impetus
After yesterday’s Pre vs. iPhone 3G battery life article I got a few emails from people very close to the chips used in the iPhone 3GS. A couple of exchanges later and I realized it might be time to go a little deeper with the hardware behind the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre.

The Original
The iPhone and iPhone 3G use a system on a chip (SoC) from Samsung. The SoC is a custom part and actually has Apple’s logo on the chip. The SoC houses the CPU, GPU and memory for the iPhone.

The CPU is based on the ARM11 core, in specific it is the ARM1176JZF-S. The CPU runs at 412MHz to save power, although the core is capable of running at 667MHz. The ARM11 CPU is a single-issue in-order microprocessor with an 8-stage integer pipeline. It’s got a 32KB L1 cache (16KB for instructions, 16KB for data) and no L2 cache. The ARM11 CPU in the iPhone also has a vector floating point unit, but thankfully the SoC includes a separate GPU for 3D acceleration. You can think of this core as a very high clocked, very advanced 486. And extremely low power. Under typical load, the CPU core should consume around 100mW. By comparison, the CPU in your laptop can require anywhere from 10 – 35W. Idle power is even lower.

Paired with this CPU is a PowerVR MBX-Lite GPU core. This GPU, like the CPU, is built on a 90nm process and is quite simple. The GPU does support hardware transform and lighting but it’s fully fixed function, think of it as a DirectX 6/7 class GPU (Riva TNT2/GeForce 256). Here’s PowerVR’s block diagram of the MBX:

The MBX-Lite in the iPhone shares the same architecture as the MBX but is optimized, once more, for power efficiency and thus is significantly slower.

I don’t have exact clock speed information for the MBX-Lite in the iPhone but I’m guessing around 60MHz.

Coupled with the CPU and the GPU in the iPhone’s SoC is 128MB of DDR memory, all on the same chip. It’s a pretty impressive little package. You get a CPU, GPU and memory all in a package that’s physically smaller than Intel’s Atom.

Now the 486 came out in 1989 and the original 3dfx Voodoo graphics card came out in 1996. The iPhone’s SoC would be ridiculously powerful if it were running the sorts of applications we had back then, but it’s not. We’re asking a lot from this little core and although it has performed admirably thanks to some clever software engineering on Apple’s part, it’s time for an update.

The Apple iPhone 3GS Review-Blackberry Bold Vs iPhone 3GS Review

The Apple iPhone 3GS Review

A friend of mine Jonty sent me this review of the Apple iPhone 3GS from Canada. While we wait for the phone to launch in India, Jonty brings us a short review of the device along with some great pics. Go ahead and read the Apple iPhone 3GS Review – the first on any indian site !

I’ve been a long time cellphone connoisseur, and have used phones from all major platforms such as Blackberry OS, iPhone OS X, S60v3, S60v5, and WM6/6.1. Last week, Apple announced a new iPhone. The question that arose after the keynote was – Should you get it?

What’s in the box ?

  • iPhone 3GS
  • Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic
  • Dock Connector to USB Cable
  • USB Power Adapter
  • Documentation
  • SIM eject tool
  • And some love from Steve Jobs .

The iPhone 3Gs – S for speed is Apple’s newest iteration of the much-sought after iPhone. Externally the two devices are identical, but internally is wherein the differences are more obvious. I’m not going into technical details of the internal hardware but for those interested – you may read all about it at here

iphone 3g on the left and 3gs on the right

Apple quotes “twice the performance” and my, does it live up to that statement. Due to the enhanced hardware, and double the RAM, the phone really does perform speedily, and performs almost ALL tasks faster than the 3G. There is a noticeable performance bump with the 3Gs and you get a sense of it right from the home screen itself. But the updates don’t stop there. One interesting feature of the iPhone 3GS is the new Oleophobic screen which will not pick up fingerprints easily.

There is a digital compass present now, a 3mp camera (up from 2mp) with continuous AF (comes in very handy!) and video recording. This phone also has now support for MMS (thanks to OS 3.0), and voice command, which is extremely accurate and let’s you control pretty much everything about the phone (native apps only). There’s also an updated 3G radio which supports speeds up to 7.2mbps. A good selection of countries don’t have this HSPA but my carrier, Rogers already supports this speed, so using iPhone 3GS over 3G is more than just pleasant – it’s extremely fast! This isn’t just attributed to the fast 3G network, but overall just a fast phone. All in all, a much needed upgrade.

Home Screen

Its pretty similar to the 3G but loads much faster and is more snappier.

Digital Compass

Voice Control

This is a great feature present only in the 3GS and is damn accurate in detecting voice commands. You can call contacts , play music by just using your voice  ! how cool does that sound ?

The following languages are supported

  • Chinese (Cantonese)
  • Chinese (China)
  • Chinese (Taiwan)
  • Dutch
  • English (UK)
  • English (U.S.)
  • Finnish
  • French (Canada)
  • French (France)
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Norwegian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Portuguese (Portugal)
  • Russian
  • Spanish (Mexico)
  • Spanish (Spain)
  • Swedish

Camera and Video

The 3.2 megapixel camera with continuous Auto-Focus and Video Recording. The last captured photo thumbnail is nicely present in the bottom-left corner. You can focus by tapping on the screen. Toggling between Video and Image mode is possible via the slider at the bottom-right corner.
Image Sample
Sharing Photos and using Email and MMS

You can easily share your photos via Email or MMS.  MMS is something which has been there for ages but  has just arrived to iPhone via 3.0 software update and Apple does it with style !

And that’s pretty much it. Should you get it? Well, here are the pro’s and cons

Pros

  • Faster processor
  • More RAM
  • Better camera with AF
  • Video recording with on-the-fly editing
  • Voice command (which works as advertised)
  • Faster 3G network (where applicable)
  • Slightly better battery life

Cons

  • Quite expensive to upgrade to if you are already locked into a contract
  • No physical difference from the 3G model (why not?)
  • Still no flash
  • Video records in 4:3 only

That’s pretty much what I’ve chalked up for now. Maybe I’ll notice a few more pro’s and cons.

I decided speed and performance were justifiable, and everything else along with the updated OS 3.0 was a bonus. Everything the iPhone lacked, has been rapidly added on, but the competition has been slow to react.

To me, the pro’s outweighed the cons, and the performance increase is tremendous. After using this phone for almost a week, I can say that using a phone with ANY lag will be an automatic no-sale in my eyes.

Unfortunately, iPhone 3GS just set the standard higher.

Please feel free to comment if you have any questions regarding the 3G/3Gs. Leaving you with a few comparison shots of the iPhone 3GS and my Blackberry.

Blackberry Bold Vs iPhone 3GS Review

Gadget Review: Blackberry Bold vs iPhone 3GS. Blackberry or iPhone? That is the question I hear every day from any person looking to obtain one of the cool gadgets. Well my friends, this review will most certainly shed some light on both phones, and hopefully you will be able to draw some conclusions at the end.

As you know from my previous post: Gadget Review: iPhone 3GS, I am quite the happy iPhone owner. I do not own a Blackberry Bold, but a lot of my friends are in possession of the competitive Research In Motion (RIM) gadget. I have played around with it several times, and I believe I have established a fairly good “rapport” with the Blackberry.

The Blackberry Bold has a very sleek design, unlike its predecessors. I fancied the look of the gadget very much. The QWERTY keyboard was always easy to use, as the buttons are very well designed for data entry on this neat gadget. Now, one of the bigger features on the Blackberry Bold is the screen. The gadget features a half VGA resolution 480 x 320 pixel color display. The quality of the picture is extremely crisp, and I would be very satisfied to watch the latest episode of Two and a Half Men. The email on the Bold is superb. I do not think there is any real competition for that particular aspect of the Blackberry, as it is the main feature that RIM strives to improve on with every new gadget release. And of course there is the Blackberry Messenger. Loved by many and desired by others. This Blackberry service is free, and it features on every Blackberry released. This cool digital gadget reduces your bill greatly on text messaging. Now of course, this is only available to Blackberry phones, hence making it such a unique feature for the RIM device.

Now for the review of the cons….yes there are always cons! The Blackberry Bold is fairly big in size. Its bulky size does not allow for seamless blending into your pocket. If RIM manages to reduce the size of Blackberry Bold to one of that the Pearl sports, I think the customer base for the gadget would increase dramatically. The Blackberry Bold browser, while an improvement, is still ways away from a user friendly interface. Navigation is done with the trackball that is located in the middle of the gadget, and the constant scrolling to navigate through the pages can become fairly annoying and tiring. I hope RIM thinks of something for the future Blackberry phones. The screen, while crisp is only a half size. But that is the trade off with most non-touch screen gadgets. Finally, the camera leaves desirable improvement. Blackberry Bold does in fact come with a flash, and the camera is a 3.2 megapixel camera, but the Sony Ericsson CyberShot dwarfs the Blackberry gadget in comparison, however we will leave the Sony Ericsson gadget for another review.

The comparison of the Blackberry Bold to the iPhone 3GS is a fairly daunting task (unlike my previous comparison of the iPhone and the Nokia N-95), as in my opinion both gadgets are intended for different target markets and meant for slightly different purposes. However, let us attempt to compare and contrast the two gadgets.

The screen comparison is fairly simple: you get a bigger screen with the iPhone, but the quality is better on the Blackberry Bold. Now, do note that the screen on the iPhone is the glue that holds everything together. While it is big, it is also almost like putting all your eggs in one basket – lest the screen crack, the gadget performance might suffer. Such is the double-edged sword nature of the touch screen phones!

If you prefer real tangible buttons for data entry such as on the Blackberry Bold, as opposed to digitized keyboards on the iPhone, the choice is fairly obvious; this one is really down to user preference. I personally happen to love the iPhone keyboard, but I do not have a problem with the Blackberry one either; it is simply that I prefer a bigger screen, and the iPhone keyboard makes it a very efficient gadget.

The camera. To be quite honest, this comparison of the two gadgets in the picture-taking aspect can be described as a Special Olympics race. Now, I have nothing against the handicapped population of our world, and apologies if you found it offensive, but to simply put it, the two cameras of the iPhone and the Blackberry Bold are simply not on par with what is out there. Blackberry trumps the iPhone by 1.2 megapixels and a flash, however it is not really something I would be particularly proud to show off to all my friends. Moving on.

Email. Absolutely no competition. Blackberry phones were designed for email. iPhone does have a decent and simple email client, but it does not even come close to the RIM gadget.

Blackberry messenger is something I would love to have on my iPhone. I am a huge admirer of the iPhone text messaging system, but if I could also send texts for free, well let’s just say that even Gollum from Lord of the Rings would overlook his Precious for a feature like that!

Browser. Once again, no contest, but this one goes to the iPhone. Easy to use, big screen, fast Safari browser. Once you have used the iPhone browser, I would dare anyone to find a gadget that aces the Apple phone. Blackberry Bold is blown out of the water, country, planet and solar system in this department.

Finally the size of the two gadgets is very comparable. Personally, I find the slim form factor of the iPhone extremely convenient, however it does make it more fragile. Don’t forget it’s in your back pocket, or you will end up having a nice spider-web design on the screen of your precious gadget. The Blackberry Bold, as mentioned earlier is fairly bulky, but it does make it much sturdier than the iPhone. I give this to the iPhone, but as with most aforementioned comparisons, this one is once again user preference.

The verdict….well there simply is no winner in this battle. Many of the comparisons of the two gadgets were ultimately down to user preference. You have to ask yourself: what am I going to use my phone for? If it is for email and organizational purposes, then I recommend the Blackberry Bold. If it is for fun and browsing, I recommend the iPhone. The choice is yours. Both gadgets are very capable of performing every task, but their design and approach to these tasks is significantly different, and you are the one to make the call – Blackberry Bold or iPhone.

I hope you found this gadget review useful, and I welcome comments or discussions on the Blackberry Bold or the iPhone. Both gadgets are fantastic pieces of technology, however, as this review outlines, the ultimate target audience is different.

iPhone 3GS v HTC Desire

iPhone 3GS v HTC Desire

The birth of the HTC Desire has caused some, including me, to seriously evaluate the best smartphones in the industry, and it is likely that this phone more than any other is a genuine contender for the all-conquering iPhone 3GS. First up, let’s have a look at the two side by side and see which is best in each department-

Feature iPhone 3GS

HTC Desire

Winner
Screen Very good in all conditions, but has a low resolution. Hi-resolution and wonderful indoors, but suffers outside. Draw
Battery Not good for power users (1 day max) Not good for power users (1 day max) Draw

Form Factor Heavy and quite chunky, but well made Ultra slim and an overall quality construction HTC Desire
Speed Fast in almost all conditions and can handle complex apps Super fast, especially when multi-tasking HTC Desire
Apps Way ahead of the competition Android is catching up, but still has some way to go iPhone 3GS
Media handling iTunes, love it or hate it, is a complete solution Quite manual moving media from desktop to phone iPhone 3GS
Call quality / speaker Poor Good next to hear, poor speaker HTC Desire
Price £440 on PAYG £387 outside contract HTC Desire
Data Entry For a touch screen it is good Better than iPhone in landscape, worse in portrait Draw
Build Quality Very good On the whole good, but back is plastic iPhone 3GS
Camera Surprisingly good for a 3MP model 5MP, flash and potential 720p video recording HTC Desire
Potential iPhone OS 4.0 could completely change the way it works Continual improvements to Android- should be able to handle a few upcoming updates Draw, but Android is growing very quickly
Cool factor Everyone has one, but still kind of cool New enough to be ultra cool HTC Desire
Gaming Rivals the PSP and Nintendo DS A long way to go iPhone 3GS
Ease of use As good as it gets Close to as good as it gets iPhone 3GS
Overall Will be in the top two for some time to come If the right strategy is followed, it could dominate 7-5 to the HTC Desire, but…

These comparisons are rarely representative of real world usage and although the Desire wins in most technical areas, does it win in the areas that mean more to the average user?

As I said in my review of the Desire, it surprised me a lot and showed me that the iPhone can be battled with on the big stage. It shows that with enough money and time, an alternative platform is capable of providing a user experience which is both practical and fun to use. The problem for Android, and the rest, is that the iPhone user experience is comprised of an interface which is unrivalled in how it feels, iTunes which brings a world of media ‘direct’ to the phone and an ever growing band of users who make the experience more widely understood than many other platforms. The iPhone opens up eBooks, mobile gaming and many other features to normal people and the other platforms struggle to do the same. However, Android is making a better job of doing this than BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, webOS etc. and is getting better with each new revision. The fact that there is such diversity of hardware as well helps keep the platform in the public’s imagination. HTC is capable of delivering high quality equipment to run the platform and arguably is easily as good as Apple in this area.

Ultimately we can consider the iPhone hardware and the high-end Android models to be as good as each other now and so the choice comes down to deciding which platform to back going forward.

Should you go for the huge wealth of apps the iPhone platform offers, but accept that you will have to do everything Apple’s way or should you go the Android route and enjoy the ‘fun’ it offers, but accept that you will have a wait to be able to enjoy the same overall quality of apps?

The fact is that I cannot choose between the two, and this is perhaps the best news of all. Android is catching up quickly and HTC is driving the progress which offers more choice for everyone. No longer is the iPhone a shoe-in for people wanting large screened media players which can work as GPS systems and throw in some serious stuff as well.

Review of Apple iPhone 3Gs-Apple Iphone 3G S 16GB Black Contract

Review of Apple iPhone 3Gs

With a select number of distributors and a strong marketing policy, quality of the brand reached to everyone. An Apple product usually gives the owner a different feeling, we can say that owning an Apple device is special. Despite of that, however, owners are not often rewarded; Apple products: the Macbooks, the iPods and the iPhones are only rarely thoroughly updated, but at the same time, it shows general character of the brand.

The iPhone 3Gs is the newest third generation of Apple iPhones coming after the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G is very similar to the Apple iPhone 3Gs.  Apple iPhone 3Gs has the same looks with The iPhone 3G, there is no way to separate them from each other. The only difference is the software enhancements, the digital compass, the higher resolution digital camera and the video function. Even though the upgrades are for iPhone 3Gs, still iPhone 3G users are pleased with these software upgrades because they can use a firmware update via iTunes to download some new features like copy / paste, the new search function and many other useful features.

The standby time of the iPhone 3Gs is very dependable, but battery life varies too much on how frequent the phone and features are used. The many different features of Apple iPhone 3Gs makes person to use them all day long, but you can be sure the battery is going to deplete in just one day. However, when used averagely a usage time of three to four days is possible. The built-in battery of iPhone 3Gs be changed by the owner.

The upgraded 3.2 megapixels digital camera of the iPhone 3Gs serves better than iPhone 3GS digital camera, in many different ways. The application can be selected through the menu, the application itself is very fast. The only way to take a picture is by touching the screen, not having a hard button for taking pictures is a disadvantage. Autofocus feature of the camera immediately works without waiting for the shutter button to be used, this system fastens the speed a lot. This means that the camera is always focused, this way it enables to take photos continuously in a fast way; normally focus is centre located but focus point can be altered by the user.

To think that Apple is also producer of iPods, expectations for iPhone 3Gs as a music player are high. It is good to know the buyers are going to be satisfied about the media player function of the iPhone 3Gs.

Surfing through the web with advanced Safari web browser is very easy. You can easily zoom in or out by moving just two fingers, enabling to access large websites. Other than not supporting Flash, it works very well. For e-mailing, the iPhone 3Gs is very easy to use. To access to your e-mail account all you have to do is enter username and password to the Gmail application at the quick bar which is at the bottom of iPhone 3Gs. The improved software that comes with iPhone 3Gs enables you to type in landscape mode and the new copy / past feature is very useful.

iPhone 3G Multitasking with iPhone OS 4.0

iPhone 3G Multitasking with iPhone OS 4.0

Several days ago we posted about a hack that could be made to a jailbroken iPhone OS 4.0 3G device that allowed it to run multitasking. The reason the hack needs to happen is that the iPhone was deemed by Apple [AAPL] not to be up to the task of multitasking due to insufficient RAM and a slower processor.

The hack involves applying the iPhone OS 4.0 jailbreak and then editing a .plist file which simply has a line in it to enable or disable multitasking.

We came across the video below just now that demonstrates the multitasking on an iPhone 3G. From what we see it does run fine with the voice in the video saying that the processor seems not to be the issue here.

However, BGR point out that iPhone OS 4.0 in Beta isn’t running everything as it should yet and therefore, will be running light on RAM and CPU usage due to it not being a final built. It will be interesting to see how multitasking performs if the .plist file is still the way to enable a jailbreak in the near future when iPhone OS 4.0 is release.

iPhone 3G: Jailbroken device multitasking on OS 4.0

Remember how we told you that iPhone 3G owners wouldn’t be able to get the full features of OS 4.0, i.e – multitasking? Well one user with a jailbroken iPhone 3G has posted a video showing that multitasking is actually possible, contradicting Apple’s claims that it wasn’t.

As reported from BGR, Apple said that multitasking wasn’t possible on the 2G or 3G, due to processor speeds. But the following video below shows you that Apple are telling us porkies.

Watch how the user enables the same multitouch interface on OS 4.0, straight on his 3G, using the same method of double-clicking the homescreen to switch between Apps.

You can thank iPhone hacker cdevwill for the video, and his simple modifcation of the N82AP.plist for the ending result.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you angry with Apple for not being entirely honest? Watch the video below and have your say.
