Cell Phone Battery

Types of Cell Phone Batteries

There are several types of cell phone batteries still available on the market:

  • NiCd or Nickel Cadmium
  • These are rechargeable batteries that offer the most affordable pricing. On the other hand these cell phone batteries require more frequent charging and are not environmentally friendly. These batteries require full discharge/recharge to reduce “memory effect” which results in ongoing reduction in the ability to fully recharge.

  • NiMH or Nickel Metal Hydride
  • Due to the lack of Cadmium, these rechargeable batteries are more environmentally friendly. They are also preferable as they pack more usage time than their Cadmium counterparts; holding a charge at least 30% longer. “Memory Effect” is also less of a factor with these batteries.

  • Li-Ion or Lithium Ion
  • These rechargeable cell phone batteries are currently the most common on the market and are a bit smaller. They offer a longer life and don’t experience “memory effect” but on the other hand are more expensive than NiCd or NiMH batteries.

  • Li-Poly or Lithium Polymer
  • These batteries are the newest on the scene and are the lightest weight cell phone batteries available. Like Li-Ion batteries they hold a charge significantly longer than batteries with older technology.

  • Other Terms You Will Hear
  • OEM battery: This stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer

Aftermarket: This indicates that a battery is made by a company other than the OEM but should be made to the same specifications.

Clone: These batteries are to be avoided. They are aftermarket batteries that aren’t made to the same specifications as the OEM and often lack the same protective circuitry to avoid overheating and so forth.

    Charging Cell Phone Batteries

Properly charging a cell phone battery is important if you wish to extend the life of the battery and get the best performance.

Proper charging is different for the different types of batteries. In general, you want to fully charge a new battery before it’s first use. While NiMH batteries need a full discharge prior to recharge every few cycles it is unwise to do so with a Lithium Ion battery. Li-Ion charging should occur when the meter shows no less than one bar; don’t wait for a full discharge.

For the best performance it is recommended that users review the manufacturers instructions. There is also a handy article at CellPower.com that provides some general recommendations for the various cell phone battery types and one from BatteryUniversity.com that answers other charging questions.

    Caring for Cell Phone Batteries

Aside from charging your batteries properly there are a number of things you can do to extend their life and assure good performance.

  • Avoid exposing the phone/battery to moisture. This includes keeping hands dry and assuring that your phone isn’t accidentally dropped into a sink, stream, or toilet. Keeping it on a leash can help reduce this risk.
  • Handle it carefully; avoid dropping it. Again, a leash or clip can reduce this risk.
  • Avoid excessive heat. Cell phone batteries prefer cool, not excessively cold, dry climates. Leaving cell phones in a window sill, laying on the kitchen counter beside a stove top or oven, near a heat register, or in a hot car is unwise.
  • Proper cleaning is sometimes needed when corrosion occurs. Contacts can be cleaned with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab. Avoid touching other components.
  • Conserving Cell Phone Battery Power/Extending Battery Life

If you truly want to extend the time between charges and extend the overall life of your cell phone battery there are additional things you can do.

  • Turn the phone off when not in use. For instance, consider turning it off when you’re sleeping, when you are driving, when in classes or a meeting, and when flying. Certainly, if you are in an area with poor or no reception there is no need to have your cell phone on. It will use additional battery power in such situations as it searches for a better signal.
  • Consider a repeater, home base station, or some other device to assure your phone gets a good signal. You can learn more about getting better cell phone reception here.
  • Don’t use the cell phone batteries when it’s not necessary. If you’re sitting next to an outlet, plug it in when you are on the phone.
  • Cut back on functions that consume a great deal of battery power. The vibrate function, extra volume, taking pictures, playing games, and surfing the internet all consume a great deal of power.
  • Turn off or dim the backlight, set it to go off after a couple of seconds, turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and similar functions when not in use.
  • Remove the batteries from your phone if it won’t be used for more than a day or two. They can be stored in an airtight bag in the refrigerator (not freezer) but be sure to allow them to warm up before recharging and then using them. (Store Li-ion batteries with a 40% charge)
  • Don’t purchase cell phone batteries and store them for more than a few weeks as they will still lose power despite not being in use.
  • Tips for Buying a Replacement Cell Phone Battery

If your cell phone battery fails you’ll want a new one. You may also find yourself in need if you choose to have a backup battery due to heavy use or traveling. When buying a replacement battery be sure to check:

  • the type of battery recommended by the manufacturer and the size your specific phone will accomodate
  • obviously trying to purchase a cell phone battery directly from your cellular company is often the easiest way to shop but if you don’t find what you need or want a better bargain you can try specialty battery stores and online retailers
  • Check the date on the batteries. Batteries in generaly will last for 300-400 cycles but even when they aren’t in use they are losing power; thus a battery that has been on the shelf for 6 months won’t last as long.
  • Although “clone batteries” may offer a better bargain it is often best to avoid these as they aren’t always safe as they sometimes lack protective circuits.
  • If you want cell phone batteries that go longer between charges, choose Li-Ion or Li-Poly. More mAh (milli-amperes per hour) the more battery power.
  • Cell Phone Battery Leak

Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer cell phone batteries don’t really leak but other batteries can. If leaking occurs, contact the battery manufacturer. Batteries are often guaranteed against leakage and the company may clean up the mess for you or replaced any damaged goods.

If you need to do it yourself be safe, use gloves and goggles, and stay in well ventilated areas. Of course, start by removing the battery. Many experts then recommend using a pencil eraser to rub off any leakage or perhaps an emery cloth on any metal parts. A vinegar/water solution applied to a cotton swab is sometimes useful as well.

Before closing up, it is important to assure that everything is completely dry. If you use a hair dryer for this purpose be sure to use the Cool setting.

  • WiFi MP3 Players

WiFi MP3 Players for Connecting on the Go

MP3 players with built-in WiFi can help users connect when on the road or on the town via hotspots. It can allow them  to stream from their PC without the cables and perhaps to share their media with other users. An MP3 player with WiFi adds convenience and expands your ability to fully make use of your device.

This page will highlight some of the options currently on the market.

    Buying an MP3 Player

wifi mp3 playerChoosing an MP3 player requires you to think about several things. Here are some starting points:

    1. Price.
Most people have a budget. Basic MP3 players are pretty affordable. But if you add in a web browser, WiFi connectivity, and more, the price goes up significantly.

    2. Compatibility.
To upload music to your MP3 player, it will need to be able to connect (via USB or WiFi) to your computer and be compatible with your operating system.

    3. Storage capacity.
More storage means a higher price. You shouldn’t pay for storage you won’t use, but you want enough to hold the music, and videos/photos, that you love. The capacity needed depends upon the user’s preferences. Many devices offer internal hard drive storage, but may also provide the ability to expand this with an SD/SDHC card slot.

    4. The entertainment you want.
Most modern MP3 players offer video entertainment as well. If you use the screen for more than just viewing artist, title, and so forth, you want to really examine the screen to assure you enjoy the view. Brightness, color, resolution and so forth will be important. The most basic concern of course would be screen size. Viewing a TV show or movie on a screen under 3 inches won’t be as enjoyable. Some people also want radio or perhaps web browsing, so they need to look for this capability as well.

    5. Ease of use.
Simple menus are good. Some prefer a touch screen, others don’t. Again personal preferences come in to play. However, you also want to know how easy it will be to download music and other media. Some players offer drag and drop simplicity, others don’t. Having built-in WiFi is another feature than can add convenience and ease of use. WiFi can allow you to connect wirelessly when out and about or at home and it can provide you with the ability to stream content without having to physically hook up.

    6. Selection.
Some devices give you a huge selection of music beyond your own CD collection. Know what online sources you can use with the device you choose (i.e. iTunes). Some provide access to TV shows, movies, podcasts and free content from sites such as YouTube and others. Other also offer an FM radio or access to Slacker radio. Of course a device with Wi-Fi may also allow you to share your media with others and visa versa further expanding your selection.

    7. Sound quality.
Listening before you buy is wise. Keep in mind of course that many MP3 players don’t offer the highest quality earphones, and, if you don’t mind spending a bit more, you can upgrade the earphones.

So You Want Your MP3 Player to Do a Little More Than Play Music?

Many electronic devices multi-task. Often cell phones are also cameras and MP3 players. Digital cameras are frequently video cameras too. It only stands to reason that those who put a priority on listening to music would want a camera on board. So naturally an MP3 player with camera would be something that those people might be interested in having.

Well, it’s just for those individuals that this page was designed. We’ll cover your options here and show you what’s on the market.

    What are Your Options?

So you love your music but would like to have a little camera along with you too, what do you do?

  • Buy an MP3 player with camera. There aren’t really a lot of devices out there, but there are a few. You can see them below. They aren’t many of the big names in the business like iPod, Zune, Creative Zen, or Sandisk, but some of these devices receive reasonable customer reviews.
  • Buy a digital camera with an MP3 player. This will definitely give you a better camera, but you might make some sacrifices on the music side. The number of options is pretty limited in this category as well but there are a few manufactured by a major industry name.
  • Buy a music phone with a camera. This is a good option IF you also want a cell phone. So many phones now have both an MP3 player and a camera, they aren’t too hard to find.
  • Choosing an MP3 Player with Camera

If your primary need is music, then getting a player with enough storage to hold the tunes you want is critical. Of course sound is also important in such instances, so listening before you buy is always the best option. When this isn’t possible just be sure there’s a reasonable return policy. Even the big name, more expensive MP3 players often come with inferior earphones, so purchasing upgraded earphones is sometimes necessary.

Any MP3 player you buy will also need to support the file formats you want. MP3 files are a given but if you know you’ll also want to use AAC or other files be sure they’re supported. Of course you’ll also want to know that the device is compatible with your computer and operating system so that they can connect.

Your expectations for the camera should probably be pretty basic if you’re going the route of an MP3 player with camera. A couple of megapixels will produce reasonable shots in daylight for sharing online or for small prints. You should investigate whether or not there’s autofocus or a flash at a minimum. If not, you’ll be pretty limited with the photography end of things.

Because these are specialty devices, the number of people owning them is smaller than your typical media player or camera. You generally won’t find them reviewed in publications like Consumer Reports but you can still read customer reviews to get an idea of what others have experienced with them. We’ve selected some that have received some positive feedback for you to consider. You can read the details if you click on the images.

    Wii Accessories

    You Will Need Extra Controllers
Since the Wii only comes with one Nunchuck, and one Wii-mote, I would advise that you buy extras so you can include your friends and family in the games. The extra Wii-motes and Nunchuk will help take you gaming experience to an entirely new level. Take my word for it; Wii Sports is much more interesting when you’re playing a human.

    The Wii Sports Pack
The Wii Sports Pack has a range of fun controller add ons that make the game a bit more realistic. The Golf Club Grip, miniature Tennis Racket Grip and a Baseball Bat all attach very easily and quickly to the Wii-mote.

    The Wii Steering Wheel
Playing car games using the Wii-mote just doesn’t feel right. The Wii Steering Wheel is simple but effective and makes the game feel more natural, and more realistic. Wasn’t that the main reason the Wii was invented?

    Better Connecting Cables
After purchasing the Wii you might notice the basic RCA cables that were provided were a bit, outdated. If you are one of the privileged, and own a Plasma, DLP or LCD screen, then a simply way to add some extra quality would be to replace the old cables with either the Wii S-Video cable or the Wii component AV cables. The Wii isn’t HD like Xbox 360 or PS3, but this is a fast way of getting a better picture at a minimum cost.

    The Controller Docking Station
If you’re like me, a hard core gamer, you will also notice that the Wii-mote and Nunchuk love to eat up all the AA batteries. There are several different docking stations for the Wii-mote and Nunchuk that simply replace the standard batteries with rechargeable ones. When you aren’t using them, the Wii-motes are charging up for when you get back, and play for 12 hours straight.

    A GameCube Controller
If you plan on taking advantage of the Wii’s backwards capability then a GameCube controller is a must have. You pick up a controller from Best Buy, or get one for almost free on eBay. The GameCube also has a cordless remote, the Wavebird, for a wire free gaming experience.

    A SD Card
The Wii comes with a small 512mb SC card, which isn’t a problem if you only play a few different games. I, myself, bought a few 2 GB cards, as backup, because I know I’m going to go right through them. They aren’t too expensive, and if you like to continue where you left off, they are a must.

    A Spare Sensor Bar
The Wii comes with an infrared sensor bar, which is what gives it its technology, but they are easily damaged. My cat pulled the cord apart and I was stuck for a week, waiting for the replacement. Go ahead and buy a spare, because something is bound to happen to everyone’s.

    A Wii Points Game card
The Wii points system is one of my personal favorite features of the Wii. It allows you to buy classic games from the old Nintendo platforms, like Mario Kart, and play them on the Wii. You can buy a prepaid Wii point card or buy the points online. 100 Wii points per Dollar (US) is the standing rate.

Yes, Guitar Hero. Or Rock Band
Everybody has heard of Guitar Hero. I have it on PS2, and decided to buy it on Wii. Guitar Hero and Rock Band could be the best Wii games on the market, at this point. Either one of these games, or both if you have the money, is a necessity! Go buy the game, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Wii game consoles and fit boards are flying off the shelves. Many kids, parents, and even grandparents have been using the Wii with the hopes of losing weight. With so many games out there, many are left wondering which

games are the best and which are the games you will want to use again and again. Here are some of my personal favorite fun yet effective games:

    1. Gold Gym Cardio Workout

With Gold Gym Cardio Workout you can get a real workout doing fun activities like boxing, running, and much more. It is compatible with the Balance Board. There are different levels of difficulty to this game is great for a novice or an athlete. It is a fun way to add variety to your work out and easily track your progress.

    2. Walk It Out

Walk It Out is a great way to work out for those who hate to work out. It is surprisingly fun and addictive. It is great for those people who can’t do high impact exercises. Players walk in rhythm of an in-game soundtrack and complete mini-games that exercise the mind and body. You enjoy cartoonish surroundings as you walk yourself to fit. You can choose to use the DDR mat or the Wii Balance Board controllers.

    3. Wii Fit Plus

Wii Fit Plus is an update of the Wii Fit not a sequel. It was designed to improve a person’s overall fitness. You can personalize your weight loss goals and track your progress. There is yoga, strength, balance, and other game options. One new exercise is Rhythm Kung-Fu. In this new exercise you try different poses with silly background music. It requires the Wii Balance Board.

    4. EA Sports Active

The Wii Sports Active is more than just a game. For about $50, you get the Wii game, and the additional accessories you need to complete the exercises. It has 20 minute circuits that contain several different exercises that target different parts of the body. It tracks your progress. It is compatible with the Wii Balance Board but is not required. It requires more energy than most games and may leave you sweating.

    5. Just Dance

Just Dance features more than 30 songs like “You Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer and modern day pop songs like “Hot N Cold” by Katy Perry. The lyrics for each song scroll

along at the bottom so you can sing along to the beat. It is even more fun to dance along with the whole family. It can be an easy way get your kids active along with you.

As the Wii continues to add to the ever expanding library of games and gains increasing market share in the gaming community, they continue to introduce new and innovative accessories to enhance game play. Gamers today are never satisfied with the status quo, and Nintendo attempts to quench their thirst for innovation with a growing catalog of accessories to help accentuate their unique game system. One of the most popular Wii accessories is the Wii Nunchuck controller. This connects easily to the Wii Remote via the expansion port. When these two

devices are combined, they provide you with a level of precision game play that is simply not achievable with the Wii Remote alone. The Remote/Nunchuck duo are relatively dependant on one another, and Nintendo cleverly designed the combination to be ambidextrous, making it an ideal option for both left and right handed players. The Nunchuck is equipped with the same motion sensitive technology as the original Remote and is often used as the device for moving playable characters in games. In order for a number of other available accessories to function properly, gamers will need to be equipped with the Nunchuck in addition to the original Remote.

Another extremely successful addition to the Wii accessory arsenal has been the Wii Balance Board. Most commonly thought of in conjunction with the Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus, the Balance Board provides an even more intuitive and interactive experience for gamers than the typical Wii Remote and accessories. The Balance Board actually allows the user to stand on top of it, making use of a much wider array of body movements in their game play. Gamers can jump, stretch, snowboard, slalom, and participate in yoga and aerobics, just to name a few things. It offers a new experience that gets people up off of their couches and fully engrossed in their game. It is not only a fun addition to the Wii; it also promotes a healthy lifestyle by providing the user with cardio and aerobic exercise.

Keeping in line with the fitness conscious Wii fanatic, the Company X Accessories – Everlast 2 lb. Dumbbells for Nintendo Wii add a new dimension to achieving fitness while enjoying Wii play. These dumbbells are designed to fit both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, add two pounds to the weight of equipment, yet still allow full access to the devices buttons and straps. These can be used with a variety of games, such as: Wii Fit, Gold’s Gym Cardio, Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009, and EA Sports Active. That doesn’t mean, however, that they can’t be used while playing just any Wii game for an extra workout while enjoying your favorite titles.

The Nintendo Wii Zapper is for use with a number of shooting games and is usually packaged with Link’s Crossbow training. Both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controller are needed to make the Zapper function properly. This may not be the best option available for first person shooter games, but it has received positive reviews for its performance with Link’s Crossbow training and other hunting/shooting games.

The Wii Wheel offers an authentic experience to those gamers that really enjoy driving and racing games. While offering a simplistic design, it offers the ability to play racing games while steering your vehicle in a natural and realistic manner, just as if you were actually behind the wheel. Accuracy and control are improved, all while providing a new level of realism to the experience. A simple snap of the Wii Remote into the Wheel and you are off to the races.

Nintendo made a smart decision when they decided that they wanted to be a part of the Rock Band revolution that has taken on the gaming community by storm. With their Wireless Guitar, they allow fans of the popular game to rock to their hearts content without the hassle of dealing with bothersome cords. Two sets of frets, both high and low, allow for enjoyment of this accessory by big and little hands alike.

The Nyko – Charge Station Charging Dock and Rechargeable Battery Pack Set is an absolute must have for all Wii fans. Fear of battery failure can cause anxiety for many Wii fans, especially when they are smack dab in the middle of an intense game. We’ve all been there before; the greatest game of your entire life being ruined by dead batteries. You can alleviate that fear with the addition of this bundle to your collection. The Charging Dock can charge up to two Wii Remotes simultaneously, but can also charge them individually so that you can continue playing with one Remote while charging another. The rechargeable batteries that are used protrude from the back of the Remote more so than typical AA batteries, so this bundle includes modified back plates to keep your battery locked securely in place. They even had enough foresight to coat the back of the plate with rubber grips to help prevent the Remote from slipping from your hand during game play.

Wii Bowling has taken on an almost cult following since it was introduced as one of the many games on the original Wii Sports. It has taken on such a huge audience and gained so much momentum that Wii Bowling Leagues have begun to sprout up all over the place. To try and add a new element of realism to this phenomenon, the Bowling Ball was introduced. This works with the popular Wii Sports game as well as with AMF Bowling: World Lanes. With this Bowling Ball, your Wii Remote is placed inside the ball and the players fingers are inserted into three finger holes, just like on a real bowling ball. The included wrist strap helps to secure the ball to the player and prevents the ball from slipping from your hands during game play. Hole adapters help the ball to adjust to differing finger sizes.

Dual Glow Sabers, by dreamGEAR, were introduced to satisfy the Star Wars fan in all of us. These Sabers feature red and blue LEDs that give off tremendous glow effects during play. These can be used for any game that requires a slashing motion of any kind. Two AAA batteries are required to power the LED for each Saber.
The Wii Speak is an interesting accessory that fits a need for a limited audience, but one that has received numerous rave reviews from those that have experienced it. The Wii Speak allows you to chat with other online gamers as though they were standing right in the room with you. Set the Wii Speak on top of your sensor bar and the microphone picks up the voices of everyone in the room and transmits them to the other gamers you are playing with, whether near or far. Currently, the Wii Speak is intended for use with Animal Crossing: City Folk.

Another exciting, yet game specific accessory, is the Skateboard Controller used with Activision – Tony Hawk: Ride. This motion sensing skateboard controller gives the rider revolutionary control of their game by translating their movements into amazing tricks within the game. The board contains four smart motion sensors which respond precisely to your movements, and its contoured base ensures your stability and control while allowing for full range of motion. Pull up for speed, pull off for grabs, and use your body to react as though you were really grinding on a real board. With no complicated button combinations to master, you get the feeling that you are really skating. Even the gritty surface of the skateboard was made to mimic the grip tape on an actual skateboard, offering an even more realistic experience.

One of the most exciting features of the Wii is its online gaming capabilities. This allows you to pair up and play games with friends from across the street or across the country. The Wii is capable of connecting wirelessly to the Internet, but not everyone that owns one has the capability of establishing a wireless connection. For those that do not, there is the Rocketfish – LAN Adapter. The six foot Ethernet cable is used to connect to your existing router and plugs into your Wii with a USB2.0 connection, allowing for online game play without the use of a wireless network.

Component Video/Stereo Audio Gaming cables can help to deliver the clarity and crispness that serious gamers demand. The cables connect to the component video and stereo audio outputs of your TV or home theatre system. They can help to produce a clearer picture and better sound quality than the standard AV cables that are provided with the Wii.

Nintendo continues to innovate and find new ways to make the Wii experience a more fulfilling and entertaining use of our valuable time. Whether it be an accessory to improve the appearance and sound of the game or an adapter to make our gaming seem more realistic than ever, there are no shortages of options available to their loyal followers.
