You Will Need Extra Controllers
Since the Wii only comes with one Nunchuck, and one Wii-mote, I would advise that you buy extras so you can include your friends and family in the games. The extra Wii-motes and Nunchuk will help take you gaming experience to an entirely new level. Take my word for it; Wii Sports is much more interesting when you’re playing a human.
The Wii Sports Pack
The Wii Sports Pack has a range of fun controller add ons that make the game a bit more realistic. The Golf Club Grip, miniature Tennis Racket Grip and a Baseball Bat all attach very easily and quickly to the Wii-mote.
The Wii Steering Wheel
Playing car games using the Wii-mote just doesn’t feel right. The Wii Steering Wheel is simple but effective and makes the game feel more natural, and more realistic. Wasn’t that the main reason the Wii was invented?
Better Connecting Cables
After purchasing the Wii you might notice the basic RCA cables that were provided were a bit, outdated. If you are one of the privileged, and own a Plasma, DLP or LCD screen, then a simply way to add some extra quality would be to replace the old cables with either the Wii S-Video cable or the Wii component AV cables. The Wii isn’t HD like Xbox 360 or PS3, but this is a fast way of getting a better picture at a minimum cost.
The Controller Docking Station
If you’re like me, a hard core gamer, you will also notice that the Wii-mote and Nunchuk love to eat up all the AA batteries. There are several different docking stations for the Wii-mote and Nunchuk that simply replace the standard batteries with rechargeable ones. When you aren’t using them, the Wii-motes are charging up for when you get back, and play for 12 hours straight.
A GameCube Controller
If you plan on taking advantage of the Wii’s backwards capability then a GameCube controller is a must have. You pick up a controller from Best Buy, or get one for almost free on eBay. The GameCube also has a cordless remote, the Wavebird, for a wire free gaming experience.
A SD Card
The Wii comes with a small 512mb SC card, which isn’t a problem if you only play a few different games. I, myself, bought a few 2 GB cards, as backup, because I know I’m going to go right through them. They aren’t too expensive, and if you like to continue where you left off, they are a must.
A Spare Sensor Bar
The Wii comes with an infrared sensor bar, which is what gives it its technology, but they are easily damaged. My cat pulled the cord apart and I was stuck for a week, waiting for the replacement. Go ahead and buy a spare, because something is bound to happen to everyone’s.
A Wii Points Game card
The Wii points system is one of my personal favorite features of the Wii. It allows you to buy classic games from the old Nintendo platforms, like Mario Kart, and play them on the Wii. You can buy a prepaid Wii point card or buy the points online. 100 Wii points per Dollar (US) is the standing rate.
Yes, Guitar Hero. Or Rock Band
Everybody has heard of Guitar Hero. I have it on PS2, and decided to buy it on Wii. Guitar Hero and Rock Band could be the best Wii games on the market, at this point. Either one of these games, or both if you have the money, is a necessity! Go buy the game, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Wii game consoles and fit boards are flying off the shelves. Many kids, parents, and even grandparents have been using the Wii with the hopes of losing weight. With so many games out there, many are left wondering which
games are the best and which are the games you will want to use again and again. Here are some of my personal favorite fun yet effective games:
1. Gold Gym Cardio Workout
With Gold Gym Cardio Workout you can get a real workout doing fun activities like boxing, running, and much more. It is compatible with the Balance Board. There are different levels of difficulty to this game is great for a novice or an athlete. It is a fun way to add variety to your work out and easily track your progress.
2. Walk It Out
Walk It Out is a great way to work out for those who hate to work out. It is surprisingly fun and addictive. It is great for those people who can’t do high impact exercises. Players walk in rhythm of an in-game soundtrack and complete mini-games that exercise the mind and body. You enjoy cartoonish surroundings as you walk yourself to fit. You can choose to use the DDR mat or the Wii Balance Board controllers.
3. Wii Fit Plus
Wii Fit Plus is an update of the Wii Fit not a sequel. It was designed to improve a person’s overall fitness. You can personalize your weight loss goals and track your progress. There is yoga, strength, balance, and other game options. One new exercise is Rhythm Kung-Fu. In this new exercise you try different poses with silly background music. It requires the Wii Balance Board.
4. EA Sports Active
The Wii Sports Active is more than just a game. For about $50, you get the Wii game, and the additional accessories you need to complete the exercises. It has 20 minute circuits that contain several different exercises that target different parts of the body. It tracks your progress. It is compatible with the Wii Balance Board but is not required. It requires more energy than most games and may leave you sweating.
5. Just Dance
Just Dance features more than 30 songs like “You Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer and modern day pop songs like “Hot N Cold” by Katy Perry. The lyrics for each song scroll
along at the bottom so you can sing along to the beat. It is even more fun to dance along with the whole family. It can be an easy way get your kids active along with you.
As the Wii continues to add to the ever expanding library of games and gains increasing market share in the gaming community, they continue to introduce new and innovative accessories to enhance game play. Gamers today are never satisfied with the status quo, and Nintendo attempts to quench their thirst for innovation with a growing catalog of accessories to help accentuate their unique game system. One of the most popular Wii accessories is the Wii Nunchuck controller. This connects easily to the Wii Remote via the expansion port. When these two
devices are combined, they provide you with a level of precision game play that is simply not achievable with the Wii Remote alone. The Remote/Nunchuck duo are relatively dependant on one another, and Nintendo cleverly designed the combination to be ambidextrous, making it an ideal option for both left and right handed players. The Nunchuck is equipped with the same motion sensitive technology as the original Remote and is often used as the device for moving playable characters in games. In order for a number of other available accessories to function properly, gamers will need to be equipped with the Nunchuck in addition to the original Remote.
Another extremely successful addition to the Wii accessory arsenal has been the Wii Balance Board. Most commonly thought of in conjunction with the Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus, the Balance Board provides an even more intuitive and interactive experience for gamers than the typical Wii Remote and accessories. The Balance Board actually allows the user to stand on top of it, making use of a much wider array of body movements in their game play. Gamers can jump, stretch, snowboard, slalom, and participate in yoga and aerobics, just to name a few things. It offers a new experience that gets people up off of their couches and fully engrossed in their game. It is not only a fun addition to the Wii; it also promotes a healthy lifestyle by providing the user with cardio and aerobic exercise.
Keeping in line with the fitness conscious Wii fanatic, the Company X Accessories – Everlast 2 lb. Dumbbells for Nintendo Wii add a new dimension to achieving fitness while enjoying Wii play. These dumbbells are designed to fit both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, add two pounds to the weight of equipment, yet still allow full access to the devices buttons and straps. These can be used with a variety of games, such as: Wii Fit, Gold’s Gym Cardio, Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009, and EA Sports Active. That doesn’t mean, however, that they can’t be used while playing just any Wii game for an extra workout while enjoying your favorite titles.
The Nintendo Wii Zapper is for use with a number of shooting games and is usually packaged with Link’s Crossbow training. Both the Wii Remote and Nunchuck controller are needed to make the Zapper function properly. This may not be the best option available for first person shooter games, but it has received positive reviews for its performance with Link’s Crossbow training and other hunting/shooting games.
The Wii Wheel offers an authentic experience to those gamers that really enjoy driving and racing games. While offering a simplistic design, it offers the ability to play racing games while steering your vehicle in a natural and realistic manner, just as if you were actually behind the wheel. Accuracy and control are improved, all while providing a new level of realism to the experience. A simple snap of the Wii Remote into the Wheel and you are off to the races.
Nintendo made a smart decision when they decided that they wanted to be a part of the Rock Band revolution that has taken on the gaming community by storm. With their Wireless Guitar, they allow fans of the popular game to rock to their hearts content without the hassle of dealing with bothersome cords. Two sets of frets, both high and low, allow for enjoyment of this accessory by big and little hands alike.
The Nyko – Charge Station Charging Dock and Rechargeable Battery Pack Set is an absolute must have for all Wii fans. Fear of battery failure can cause anxiety for many Wii fans, especially when they are smack dab in the middle of an intense game. We’ve all been there before; the greatest game of your entire life being ruined by dead batteries. You can alleviate that fear with the addition of this bundle to your collection. The Charging Dock can charge up to two Wii Remotes simultaneously, but can also charge them individually so that you can continue playing with one Remote while charging another. The rechargeable batteries that are used protrude from the back of the Remote more so than typical AA batteries, so this bundle includes modified back plates to keep your battery locked securely in place. They even had enough foresight to coat the back of the plate with rubber grips to help prevent the Remote from slipping from your hand during game play.
Wii Bowling has taken on an almost cult following since it was introduced as one of the many games on the original Wii Sports. It has taken on such a huge audience and gained so much momentum that Wii Bowling Leagues have begun to sprout up all over the place. To try and add a new element of realism to this phenomenon, the Bowling Ball was introduced. This works with the popular Wii Sports game as well as with AMF Bowling: World Lanes. With this Bowling Ball, your Wii Remote is placed inside the ball and the players fingers are inserted into three finger holes, just like on a real bowling ball. The included wrist strap helps to secure the ball to the player and prevents the ball from slipping from your hands during game play. Hole adapters help the ball to adjust to differing finger sizes.
Dual Glow Sabers, by dreamGEAR, were introduced to satisfy the Star Wars fan in all of us. These Sabers feature red and blue LEDs that give off tremendous glow effects during play. These can be used for any game that requires a slashing motion of any kind. Two AAA batteries are required to power the LED for each Saber.
The Wii Speak is an interesting accessory that fits a need for a limited audience, but one that has received numerous rave reviews from those that have experienced it. The Wii Speak allows you to chat with other online gamers as though they were standing right in the room with you. Set the Wii Speak on top of your sensor bar and the microphone picks up the voices of everyone in the room and transmits them to the other gamers you are playing with, whether near or far. Currently, the Wii Speak is intended for use with Animal Crossing: City Folk.
Another exciting, yet game specific accessory, is the Skateboard Controller used with Activision – Tony Hawk: Ride. This motion sensing skateboard controller gives the rider revolutionary control of their game by translating their movements into amazing tricks within the game. The board contains four smart motion sensors which respond precisely to your movements, and its contoured base ensures your stability and control while allowing for full range of motion. Pull up for speed, pull off for grabs, and use your body to react as though you were really grinding on a real board. With no complicated button combinations to master, you get the feeling that you are really skating. Even the gritty surface of the skateboard was made to mimic the grip tape on an actual skateboard, offering an even more realistic experience.
One of the most exciting features of the Wii is its online gaming capabilities. This allows you to pair up and play games with friends from across the street or across the country. The Wii is capable of connecting wirelessly to the Internet, but not everyone that owns one has the capability of establishing a wireless connection. For those that do not, there is the Rocketfish – LAN Adapter. The six foot Ethernet cable is used to connect to your existing router and plugs into your Wii with a USB2.0 connection, allowing for online game play without the use of a wireless network.
Component Video/Stereo Audio Gaming cables can help to deliver the clarity and crispness that serious gamers demand. The cables connect to the component video and stereo audio outputs of your TV or home theatre system. They can help to produce a clearer picture and better sound quality than the standard AV cables that are provided with the Wii.
Nintendo continues to innovate and find new ways to make the Wii experience a more fulfilling and entertaining use of our valuable time. Whether it be an accessory to improve the appearance and sound of the game or an adapter to make our gaming seem more realistic than ever, there are no shortages of options available to their loyal followers.
